Fucus (Fucus vesiculosus L.) contains abundant mineral salts which makes this plant drug a powerful remineralizer. Potassium salts produce a diuretic effect. Iodine stimulates thyroid gland function, favoring catabolic processes.

It contains algin which has a great swelling capacity that, by not being absorbed in the intestine, produces a feeling of satiety, it also acts as a protector of gastric mucosas. It is a mild laxative and due to its absorbent power an antidiarrheal. The hypolipemic and hypocholesterolemic action is attributed to the presence of laminarin.

Externally, alginate is used as a local hemostatic. The set of properties determines its use as an adjuvant in treatments of overweight, hypothyroidism, bulimia, gastroduodenal ulcers, constipation, diarrhea.

In topical use, for wound healing, dermal ulcers and dental hemorrhages.
