  • With the arrival of autumn and winter, low temperatures appear and with them some health imbalances related to these.
    On this occasion we present Plant Drugs used to eliminate Phlegm and Secretions that the organism produces and deposits in the pharynx, larynx, trachea and bronchi, these are called Expectorant Plant Drugs. On the other hand and associated with the use of Expectorants, Demulcent Plant Drugs are usually used, whose non-fatty active principles soften, relax and protect the skin and mucous membranes.


    Below is presented a Plant Drug whose pharmacological action is mainly Expectorant and Demulcent:

    Licorice Extracts (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.)

    This plant drug has been used in medicine for more than 3000 years. In China it is used as a body detoxifier and as an important tonic.

    Its active principles confer various properties:Expectorant, Anti-inflammatory and Antitussive

    Used to combat cough and other respiratory diseases.

    Antibacterial: It is used in oral topical applications in dentistry to reduce or eliminate bacterial plaques and prevent cavities.

    Sweetener: Glycyrrhizin has a sweetening power 50 times greater than sucrose. It is also used as a flavor corrector in bitter medications, for example those containing Quinine.

    Antacid Antiulcer: It is used successfully in the treatment of gastroduodenal ulcers.

    Antispasmodic and digestive: It has estrogenic activity due to the action of β-sitosterol and stigmasterol, it behaves as a mild laxative (usually combined with anthraquinone compounds from Aloe Ferox, Cascara Sagrada and senna), favors muscle development and is a platelet antiaggregant.

    Indications

    Internal use: Bronchitis, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis.

    Hypersecretory dyspepsias: gastritis, gastroduodenal ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux, gastrointestinal spasms, meteorism, constipation.

    External use: glossitis, stomatitis, blepharoconjunctivitis.
