In the cosmetics, food and pharmaceutical industries, both Aloin and Gel are used.
The Aloin is a thick, yellow product with a strong characteristic odor, extracted by incision of the leaves, usually from Cape Aloe or Aloe ferox Miller, its taste is bitter and unpleasant. In contrast, the Gel is extracted from the parenchyma, from different varieties such as Aloe vera or Aloe barbadensis, its color is transparent light green, with very mild taste and odor depending on the harvest season.
The Aloin contains anthraquinone compounds that are transformed in the intestine into aloe-emodin anthrone which is irritating to the intestinal membrane, producing an increase in mucous secretion and peristalsis. At low doses it acts as a digestive stimulant and cholagogue, at medium doses it produces a laxative effect, and at high doses it is purgative.
The Gel contains abundant mucilage, which gives it demulcent properties. This product is widely used in cosmetics and in addition to its demulcent property, its moisturizing, healing, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and depigmenting properties can be mentioned.
