It possibly has its origin in Central and South America, although its current distribution is worldwide. The seeds are nutritious and contain amino acids such as arginine, tyrosine, leucine, lysine, tryptophan, choline, and asparagine. They also contain trigonelline, allantoin, glucosinolates, vitamin C, phytohemagglutinins, phaseolin, flavones, guanidinoaminovaleric acid, inositol, lectins, and mineral salts. The pods are rich in arginine and glucosinolates.
Among its properties, it stands out for its diuretic effect, as well as being slightly hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic.
It is indicated as an adjuvant in the treatment of diabetes and hyperlipidemias. It is also used in conditions requiring increased diuresis, such as cystitis, ureteritis, urethritis, pyelonephritis, oliguria, and urolithiasis (genitourinary disorders). Additionally, it is used in treatments for hyperazotemia, hyperuricemia, gout, arterial hypertension, edema, and overweight associated with fluid retention.
