  • Mullein is a plant native to Asia and Europe and has been widely used in traditional medicine, often employed in home remedies due to its medicinal properties.

    Among the active principles, we can highlight verbasterol (a phytosterol), flavonoids, saponins, essential oil, and bitter principles. It has diuretic, laxative, anticatarrhal, expectorant, antispasmodic, emollient, antinociceptive (analgesic), antimigraine, anthelmintic, calming, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and depurative actions.

    This medicinal plant is successfully used in cases of allergies, bronchitis, asthma, cold, flu, cough, tonsillitis, sore throat, etc. It improves upper respiratory tract infections, dissolves mucus and helps expel it, and soothes a throat irritated by coughing.

    Pharmacological Actions

    It has demulcent, anti-inflammatory, antitussive, and balsamic (expectorant) actions. It is also diuretic due to its flavonoid content. The compound called aucuboside (an iridoid glucoside) is responsible for its antiallergic and anti-inflammatory effects. Verbascosides, together with iridoid glucosides, have shown antibacterial and antifungal activity in vitro.

    Indications

    It is indicated for the treatment of infectious or allergic respiratory conditions such as colds, flu, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, rhinitis, bronchitis, asthma, and diarrhea. Traditionally, it is used as an antirheumatic. Topically, it produces demulcent and antipruritic effects, so it is applied in cases of dermatitis, burns, itching, boils, hemorrhoids, blepharoconjunctivitis, and chafing.
